How to Get More Writer Friends on Facebook

Whether you are a residual income writer who is looking for a few more views per article or a struggling novelist who needs a little community support, you can benefit from adding writers as friends on facebook. Though writers have developed a reputation through the years of being reclusive and quiet, that is really not the case.

While some writers still value their privacy above all things, others are friendly and outgoing. Reach out to the online writing community and you will be sure to find plenty of support in your writing endeavors. Your Triond articles will get more views, and should you need an opinion on something writer related, you will always be able to find one.

Start With the Groups

To start building your facebook writing community, add as many writing groups as you can find. On facebook, writing groups come in all shapes and sizes. From actual groups to facebook pages and personal profiles, there are a number of great writing groups on facebook. Finding them is as easy as doing a quick search, but here are a few to get you started.

NaNoWriMo: Quite possibly the largest world wide writing event, NaNoWriMo boasts a community of writers like no other. At 85,000 fans, there is always plenty of writing conversation taking place, especially in Novemer, when the month long writing event kicks off. If you’re looking for writer friends, this is a great place to start.

The Writer’s Circle: At 51,400 members, the Writer’s Circle is probably the second largest writing group on facebook.

Writing: Another good group, Writing is simply named for what it is. They only have about 3,000 members, but there is plenty of sharing and discussion going on.

Literary Writers: Though listed as a personal profile rather than a group, Literary Writers is active in the writing community and always has something helpful or interesting to share.

Facebook for Freelancers: This page always has the latest freelancing jobs posted as well as a number of helpful fans.

Introduce Yourself, Comment, and Share

It isn’t enough just to add a group. You have to become an active member. Introduce yourself to the group. A “hi, I’m new here,” is enough, but a little more information is always helpful. Let the members of the group know who you are and what you do. Then start participating in conversations. Comment on posts, answer questions, and check out or share their links. When you start posting things of your own, you’ll want others to do the same for you. Finally, when you find yourself having real conversations with people, add them. Now that they know who you are, they’ll be happy to accept your friend request.

Go To The Press!

No, I don’t mean you should take out a classified ad looking for friends. The press I’m talking about is the small press, the literary publishing houses no one’s ever heard of. There are a lot of them on facebook and they’re all trying to make a name for themselves. Help them out while helping yourself in the process. Search for the words “Press” and “Publishing” on facebook. Then send out friend requests to the ones you find.

Not only will you receive status updates from them about

things going on in the writing world, you will notice a near instant change in the ‘people you may know’ box on your facebook page. You see, authors and novelists add small presses to keep an eye on the publishing world. These writers are the most likely people to approve an unsolicited friend request. Like the presses, they want to be known. When you notice that you have eight mutual friends with someone and half of them are press and publishing houses, go ahead and add them. You’ll broaden your writing community and even discover a few great writers in the process.

Unsolicited Friend Requests

To every great plan, there is an element of risk. Here, the risk is obvious. Send out too many unsolicited friend requests and you’re going to be blocked from sending out friend requests for about a week. Personally, I think it’s worth it. Without submitting a bunch of unsolicited friend requests, there are quite a few great people I never would have come in contact with. Remember though, the risk is yours. If you choose to take it and get your friend requesting abilities temporarily revoked, don’t come crying to me. I warned you.

While there’s a good chance facebook will block your friend requests for sending out too many, there are a few ways to minimize the chances of that. Start by adding the people you know. Then move on to people you have talked to. Finally, add people who are active in writing group conversations. Choose people who are casual, friendly, and open about the projects they are working on. If someone writes more than a sentence or two about their current project, there is a very good chance they’re doing the same thing you are. They’re looking for friends, so add them.

Support Your Community

Now that you have a community of writers to share with, don’t forget to be a good neighbor yourself. If someone in your facebook circle posts a Triond or other article that is worth a read, share it on your page. Comment on it. Give it a like. They will appreciate your support and will be more likely to support you when you post something.

Answer questions when you can. Offer advice. Share websites. Treat your new facebook friends like you would treat your real life friends. Eventually, you will have a solid group of facebook writer friends who support you just as you support them.

P.S. I am always looking for a few new writer friends. Don't forget to add me as well. :)
